Diversity and inclusion have become central pillars of corporate strategy in today’s world, yet despite this progress, many individuals with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) continue to encounter significant barriers to employment

Current statistics highlight a pressing issue: only 4.8% of adults with a learning disability known to adult social care are in paid work. This figure underscores a critical gap and signals an urgent need for action. Supported internships are a key mechanism that can bridge this gap and pave the way for a more inclusive workforce.

Challenges and opportunities

Despite numerous initiatives and legislative efforts aimed at improving employment opportunities for individuals with SEND, progress has been slow. The barriers are varied, ranging from a lack of accessible job opportunities to inadequate support systems within workplaces. Supported internships offer a structured pathway to employment, providing individuals with the skills and experience needed to enter and succeed in the workforce. However, the full potential of these programmes remains untapped due to limited awareness and inadequate implementation.

Spotlight on Innovation: The West Midlands Supported Internship Event

The West Midlands Supported Internship Event, scheduled for 14th October 2024, is set to showcase the innovative practices emerging from across the region. The event, organised by Skills West Midlands and Warwickshire, supported by West Midlands Combined Authority, Shoosmiths and Whitecap, will highlight effective partnerships between employers and further education colleges. It is an opportunity for professionals in HR, specialist education, and employment services to explore best practices in delivering supported internships.

Whitecap have a strong presence in the Midlands, and we’re proudly sponsoring the event. Our involvement stems from our deep commitment to promoting inclusivity and our understanding of the power of strategic partnerships. By sponsoring this event, we aims to foster a meaningful dialogue on the benefits of supported internships and encourage businesses to adopt these programmes. We recognise that such collaborations are essential not only for preparing individuals for the workforce but also for addressing skills gaps and fostering a diverse talent pool.

The need for a more inclusive workplace

Creating a more inclusive workplace is not merely about compliance with legal standards; it is about embracing the rich diversity of talent available and leveraging it for organisational success. Supported internships play a pivotal role in this process by offering tailored support that helps individuals with SEND to gain valuable work experience and build confidence. When businesses commit to these programmes, they not only enhance their own workforce but also contribute to a more equitable society.

Businesses in the West Midlands

Local businesses in the West Midlands have been invited to attend the Supported Internship Event to discover the benefits and practical implementation of supported internships within their organisations. Participating in this event will provide businesses with insights into best practices, innovative strategies, and an opportunity to connect with a network of professionals committed to creating inclusive workplaces. Together, we can drive positive social change and build a future where everyone has the chance to succeed. Paul Cook MBE,  Principal and CEO, Hereward College commented,

We are delighted to have Whitecap as a sponsor for this showcase event. Together we aim to share the innovative practice that has been created across our region which has led to so many of our young adults with special educational needs and disabilities gaining employment through well-managed supported internship programmes.
